Take a 15-day journey through Queensland’s tropical landscapes, from rainforests to savannas and Mitchell grass plains, and from waterlily-covered lakes to mangrove-lined waterways. This tour explores the diverse habitats of Queensland’s remote north to search for some of the country’s most elusive and sought after species.
Beginning in Cairns, you'll head west through the scenic Atherton Tablelands, into the dry country of the Gulf Plains, visiting Karumba and Burketown for the stunning Purple-crowned Fairywren, Buff-sided and Mangrove Robins, White-breasted Whistler, Sandstone Shrikethrush, and a host of finches.
From Mount Isa, we’ll work our way back to the coast, looking for grasswrens, Rufous-crowned Emu-wren, Ground Cuckoo-shrike, colourful Crimson and Orange Chats and, with luck, Grey Falcon, as well as a range of other species of the spinifex grasslands and rocky ranges of the inland. This guided tour offers a great opportunity to experience Australia's unique birdlife in a relaxed and scenic setting.
This nine-day tour is designed to target far North Queensland in the Wet Season where we have the best chance of a small number of very special migrants from Papua New Guinea, birds that have a short migration window and which visit our shores for a few months only.
We take in the lowland rainforests of the incomparable Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range National Park), followed by a couple of days in the Wet Tropics, just inland from Port Douglas.
The birds we will be seeking in Kutini-Payamu are the Papuan Pitta (Erythropitta macklotii), Black-winged Monarch and Buff-breasted Paradise-kingfisher. The kingfisher can also be found in the Wet Tropics further south and we’ll have a chance for them there too. Of course, there is a suite of additional amazing birds in this region that we’ll also target, like Palm Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Magnificent Riflebird, Frill-necked Monarch, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Trumpet Manucode and Northern Scrub-robin, to name a few. Several of the species at the tip of Cape York occur no further south, as well as in Papua New Guinea, and represent an ancient avifauna that harks back to the last Ice Age, when there was a land bridge between Australia and PNG.
Around the Wet Tropics area our main target is Blue-faced Parrot-finch, at that time of year found in the highland rainforests. Here we will also look for other high-altitude specialties like Golden Bowerbird, Victoria’s Riflebird, Tooth-billed Bowerbird, Bridled Honeyeater and Fernwren, amongst others.

This tour showcases the very best of south-eastern Queensland’s wildlife, with chances to see a large number of birds, mammals and reptiles. We also visit some stunningly scenic locations which include iconic places such as O’Reilly’s in Lamington National Park, and other areas renowned for their natural values but are not on many tour itineraries, such as the Bunya Mountains and the Great Sandy National Park.
Tropical Queensland offers some of Australia’s most bird-rich landscapes. We have combined some of our favourites in this tour, offering you an excellent cross-section of wildlife experiences, from searching for the magnificent Southern Cassowary, to exploring the lush forests of the Atherton Tablelands searching for upland endemics.
This tour visits some of the most remote, bird-rich areas in Australia. In the country's far north eastern corner, the distinctive Cape York peninsula juts out into the tropical water of the Coral Sea and is home to the largest unspoilt patch of rainforest on the continent. This adventure includes 3 full days birding in Kutini-Payamu/Iron Range National Park for a host of species found nowhere else in Australia including Palm Cockatoo, Frill-necked Monarch and White-faced Robin.
We also explore the riches of Rinyirru/Lakefield National Park where Golden-shouldered Parrot and Red Goshawk will be likely highlights. And we also bird in the area around Julatten, a region widely regarded for its abundance of species. Simply put, this tour is hard to beat: it covers the highlight areas in this region and we travel at a comfortable pace. This tour is also one of our best sellers and you are welcome to join us on this next trip.
This 10-day tour takes us to an area of Outback Queensland which is internationally- significant for its rich Cretaceous fossil marine and terrestrial dinosaur finds, and home to a large variety of range-restricted extant bird and mammal specialties. Join our specialist guides as we visit collections housing huge, almost complete skeletons of ancient marine reptiles that lived in the ancient Eromanga Sea that covered much of inland Australia around 110 million years ago and the fossilised remains of 95-million-year-old terrestrial dinosaurs (including some cool footprints!). We will also try our luck at fossicking for our own Cretaceous fossils! During the tour we will also be searching for mammal specialties like the Purple-necked Rock-wallaby and bird specialities including several species of range-restricted Grasswrens, Grey Falcon, Red Goshawk, Bourke’s Parrot and hopefully huge flocks of Budgerigars and Plum-headed Finches if there is any water about.
This tour has been designed to follow Inala’s South West Queensland Tour.
We are excited to offer this new Outback adventure that takes us to the red dunes and isolated waterholes of the remote South-west corner of Queensland. Beginning in Mt Isa and ending in Longreach, the tour takes us to the Channel Country and Mulga Lands to look for inland rarities and difficult-to-find species such as Eyrean and Grey Grasswrens, Grey Falcon and Letter-winged Kite. We will visit iconic landscapes and historic towns. A highlight of the tour is a visit to Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary, a world-renowned birding location known for its diversity and rare species.
