Visit from Evan Reid, Mayfield Garden

In January, we were pleased to welcome Evan Reid from Mayfield Garden in Oberon NSW to the Inala Conservation Reserve. Evan won the inaugural Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) Hazel King Memorial Scholarship to travel to Tasmania specifically to visit Inala, and we were delighted to host him for a week and introduce him to a network of awesome horticulturalists here in Tasmania.

Evan described the reasons behind his visit to Inala in an essay published on the Australian Institute of Horticulture site.

My reason for choosing Tasmania for the Hazel King Memorial Scholarship was Dr Tonia Cochran, owner of the Inala Jurassic Garden on Bruny Island. Tonia had previously inspired me during an online BGANZ Collections Management presentation through my employer at Mayfield Garden. The passion and enthusiasm in her voice were clear when speaking about the plight of the Widdringtonia whytei, one of the world’s most threatened conifers. I knew I had to learn more.
