Tour Overview

Western Australia is Australia’s largest state, covering almost 1 million square miles and comprising the western third of the continent (which is an area larger than Western Europe). More than 500 bird species have been recorded here, including 18 endemics and many other sub-species, near endemics, migratory and other highly sought-after species.

To arrive in WA you are most likely to land in Perth and you can use this as an opportunity to spend a few days birding near to the city before you head off to explore further afield or jump east to another major city.

We are offering 2 suggestions for excellent day birding & nature tours around the Perth area, if neither of these suit you then do get in touch for us to craft a day specific to your wishes.

The tours can be combined as a longer tour package of several days and do get in touch if you are interested in longer tours around the state.

Name of Tour: Perth Big Birding Day
Perth has a wide range of habitats which provide for a large variety of water and bush birds. We will visit Jarrah/Marri forest gullies of the Darling Range and foothills heaths which provide fantastic habitat to many of the southwest Australian endemic bush bird species that can be found in Perth. We visit two important lakes and the Swan River for water birds and other bush birds.

All the sites we visit are easily accessible by car, involve short walks, and some birding from vehicle. This tour is a great option for those who want to maximise the number of species they can add to their lists in a single day. In Autumn/Winter a list of over 70 species is possible, and in Spring/Summer over 80 species is possible!

Birds you may see include Western Australian endemic and near-endemic birds like Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, Red-capped Parrot, Western Rosella, Western Thornbill, Red-winged Fairy-wren, Western Spinebill, Western Wattlebird, Gilbert’s Honeyeater, White-breasted Robin, Western Whistler and Red-eared Firetail. Other birds of we will look for include: Fairy Tern, Freckled Duck, Blue-billed Duck, Pink-eared Duck, Tawny Frogmouth, Swamp Harrier, Whistling Kite, Eastern Osprey, Australian Hobby, Australian Ringneck, Splendid Fairy-wren, and Scarlet Robin.
