The island of Papua New Guinea (PNG) is home to one of the planet’s richest and most spectacular avifauna assemblages. None are more magnificent than the members of the Bird-of-Paradise (BOP) family, with 38 of the 43 known species occurring in PNG. We provide a fantastic experience that simplifies logistics, maximizes safety and comfort, and exposes you to the incredible natural wonders of this bird-rich nation. On this tour we have selected two prime locations, Rondon Ridge in the highlands, and Karawari in the lowlands, giving you the chance to see an impressive 12 species of Bird-of-Paradise, as well as many other iconic PNG species. Members of the BOP family possible on this tour are King-of-Saxony, Twelve-wired, King, Blue and Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise, Glossy-mantled Manucode, Greater Lophorina, Brown and Black Sicklebills, Stephanie's and Ribbon-tailed Astrapias and Short-tailed Paradigalla. Add to this the chance to see endemic families such as the Satinbirds, and the monotypic Wattled Ploughbill and Blue-capped Ifrita, and a colourful diversity of passerines that include cuckoo-shrikes and trillers, logrunners, babblers, pitohuis, and bowerbirds, and you are bound for an unforgettable experience in this must-see birding destination. The itinerary - although we aim to follow the itinerary we remain flexible based on weather, wildlife activity, and local insights. Inala guides may adjust the schedule as needed to enhance the experience. In PNG we have learnt to expect the unexpected!
Price - The price detailed in the Tour Details section on page 2 of the itinerary and is based upon a group size of 6-8 participants. If the tour does not achieve minimum numbers, we may offer you the option of continuing with a smaller group size at a small supplement (we would always discuss options with you beforehand).
Charter flights: Importantly for charters a) departure times can change at the last minute, b) your flight may be advertised as non-stop but the operator may legally change the routing and make intermediate stops at the last minute, and c) the charter operator may legally substitute types of aircraft at the last minute. Charter aircraft are generally not as comfortable as scheduled aircraft.
Luggage: Aircraft size on the internal charter flights between lodges places limits on the maximum baggage allowance: 10 kg (22 pounds) per person check-in and 5 kg (11 pounds) of carry-on per person. Large, hard sided suitcases are not permitted on charter aircraft, and it is not possible to buy extra weight if the charter is full. The dimensions of the main bag should not be more than 35 cm x 81 cm or 14 inches x 32 inches and will be carried in the cargo pod. Space in the pod is the main restriction.
Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for this tour, particularly around Rondon Ridge and the highlands where walking can be steep and muddy (depending on weather conditions). However, alternative options may be available for less arduous walks if required.
Pace & Style of the Tour: Inala designs comfortable itineraries for small group tours, balancing a moderate pace with the goal of finding as many wonderful species as possible. On this tour we have selected higher end accommodation in two key destinations; this maximises the comfort and safety of your stay but also ensure you have a top birding and wildlife experience. Is this tour suitable for all birding experience levels? Absolutely! Our guides cater to everyone, from beginners to lifelong birders. Their expertise extends beyond birds, covering topics like history, botany, insects, and reptiles. Whatever your interest, our guides make this experience both educational and engaging. While birding is the core focus, this tours also highlights a diverse array of mammals, reptiles, and flora, offering stimulating experiences for guests with varied interests.
Remoteness: For much of this tour we will be in a wonderful yet remote part of the world. Most of the roads are unsealed and rough. If you have medical conditions or health concerns, it is important you make us aware of these in advance of the tour.
Photography: Many birders also enjoy photography and although photography can be challenging on this tour (high humidity and low light), this tour offers some fabulous opportunities. While we offer specialist private photography tours, on our group tours the aim for everyone to get a clear view before photographers adjust position for better shots; this is essential for maintaining group harmony.
Meals and Drinks: Breakfast generally consists of eggs cooked how you like them, toast and spreads, tea/coffee. Lunch will vary from a packed picnic to hot lunch depending on the location. Dinner is 2 courses eaten in the lodge. Drinks (soft and alcoholic) are generally not included. We request dietary requirements pre-tour and strive to accommodate all needs, including gluten- and dairy-free options. However, in more isolated areas, meal selections are limited. We send dietary requirements to meal providers in advance, but flexibility is appreciated. We encourage guests to bring reusable water bottles. Clean potable water for drinking will be provided.
Accommodation & Rooming: Accommodation are clean and comfortable and generally rated 3–4 stars. In remote regions chosen for their exceptional flora and fauna, options may be limited. Double rooms may feature a double, queen, or king bed, depending on the location. Twin rooms typically have two single beds or one single and one double/queen/king. Most rooms include en-suite bathrooms, though some remote stays may have shared facilities. Guests booking a single supplement always receive a private room, and we do our best to ensure a private bathroom as well, though occasional sharing may be necessary.
Ethics: Inala prioritises respect, conservation, and wildlife protection. We take care not to stress or disturb animals, avoiding excessive proximity and unnecessary handling. Bird call-backs are used sparingly. Our guides, inspired by Dr. Tonia Cochran’s industry-leading ethical standards, practice patience and care, leading to incredible, natural wildlife encounters.
Extras: Additional accommodation and touring options (birding, snorkelling etc) can be booked on your behalf in Cairns if required. Please let us know.
Medical Certificate: A note from a medical doctor clearing guests to be in good health to participate is required for all international tours.
Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend that all guests obtain comprehensive travel insurance to cover any financial losses resulting from cancellation, delays, medical emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances. Travel insurance is mandatory for participation in all international tours operated by Inala. Proof of adequate coverage may be requested prior to departure.
