Lord Howe Island is roughly 600km off the Australian coast and is a sub-tropical seabird covered island. Unlike most seabird islands it is inhabited and accessible! This tour offers the opportunity to see thousands of seabirds – from the comfort of land, with the option of seeing them from the water as well. Home to a number of subspecies, the highlight for most is the Lord Howe Island Woodhen; once extremely difficult to see, this species is now readily detectable across the island as a result of successful conservation efforts to protect it.
We are aiming to run the trip when the birdlife is at its peak, after the Black-winged Petrels have arrived and most species are on nests or have recently had chicks. Whilst birding will be the focus of this tour, you will also be soaking in the breathtaking landscapes, and learning about the broader natural history and conservation aspects of the island. There will also be an element of flexibility to the itinerary, dependent on weather and an opportunity to rest during the heat of the day. Your guide for this tour, Steve Davidson, was a natural choice to lead this tour. He has navigated the island before and has a passion for its conservation. This tour is suitable for people of medium to high fitness levels. Much of the tour will be conducted on foot, usually distances of 3km or less, however many walks traverse high elevation. This exciting new tour takes us through three states - a large wedge of arid inland eastern South Australia, south-west NSW, and the north-western Victorian wilderness - to look for mallee specialties such as Mallee Emu-wren, Red-lored Whistler, Cinnamon Quail-thrush and three species of grasswren (Short-tailed, Thick-billed and Striated). Starting in South Australia, we’ll head to the Flinders Ranges and the remote Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges.
Then we enter New South Wales to visit the Outback town of Broken Hill, Darling (Barka) River, Menindee Lakes and ancient Lake Mungo, before crossing the mighty Murray River. In Victoria, we’ll spend time in Hattah-Kulkyne and Murray – Sunset National Parks. Then it’s back over the Murray and a visit to the world-renowned Gluepot Sanctuary, before returning to Adelaide. As well as the mallee specialties, we’ll be searching for dry-country birds like White-winged Fairywren, Crimson Chat, Bluebonnet, Black-breasted Buzzard and the fabled Grey Falcon and Hall’s Babbler. This is sure to be a great tour, enjoying the beauty and majesty of this stark, scenic and often under-explored part of the country.
