Cara McGary grew up bird-curious in California, USA where she completed her studies in ecology and biology, including a Master’s thesis on long-term ecological change in the rocky shores of Redwood National Park. Her passion and curiosity for birds, wildlife, and their habitats have sent her to every continent - from Australia’s coasts and woodlands to the savannas of southern Africa, the cloud forests and Galápagos of Ecuador, the Himalaya, and Antarctica. In North America, she is particularly knowledgeable in the Rocky Mountain West and Pacific Coast, with a strong interest in raptors, owls, and migratory species. She settled in Western Australia in 2010, began leading birding and wildlife watching trips in 2015.
As a field biologist, ecologist, and guide, Cara enjoys leading highly customized birding and wildlife experiences grounded in both scientific knowledge and deep field experience. She helps guests build identification skills while developing a richer understanding of avian behaviour, habitat use, and ecological relationships.
Cara is a proud co-founder of the Wild Livelihoods Business Coalition, working to advance conservation efforts that protect habitat and reduce human-wildlife conflict in the Yellowstone region.
Driven by curiosity and a deep respect for wild places, Cara believes birding is one of the most powerful ways to connect people to the natural world—and to inspire its conservation.
